Preventive and Wellness Care
Helping Your Pet Stay Healthy for Every Stage of Life
The best way to help your pet live a longer, healthier life is by preventing illness before it starts.
At Willow Grove Animal Clinic, wellness visits are about much more than annual vaccinations. They’re an opportunity for our team to get to know your pet, monitor changes over time, answer your questions, and catch potential health concerns early, often before your pet shows obvious signs of illness.
Whether you have a playful puppy, an adventurous outdoor cat, or a beloved senior companion, regular wellness care helps keep them feeling their best while giving you confidence that they’re on the right path.

What are the benefits of preventive and wellness care for my cat or dog?
Whether your pet is primarily in the house, an outdoor cat, a yard dog, or a working dog, all our pets deserve proactive care to help keep them healthy. By taking a proactive approach instead of waiting for problems to arise, we can help prevent your pet from experiencing unnecessary discomfort or pain and save you from unexpected costs due to illness, injury, and more.
What to Expect During Your Pet's Wellness Visit
Every wellness visit includes a comprehensive evaluation designed around your pet’s individual needs.
Comprehensive Nose-to-Tail Exam
We carefully evaluate your pet from nose to tail, looking for subtle changes that could indicate illness, pain, or developing health concerns.
Dental Health Assessment
We’ll perform a visual examination of your pet’s teeth and gums to look for signs of tartar buildup, gingivitis, fractured teeth, oral pain, or other visible concerns. If we identify anything that warrants a closer look, we’ll discuss whether a comprehensive dental evaluation and professional cleaning under anesthesia is recommended.
Diagnostic Screening
When appropriate, we may recommend bloodwork, blood pressure testing, fecal testing, or other diagnostics to help identify problems before they become more serious. This is especially valuable for cats, who are experts at hiding illness.
Nutrition & Weight Guidance
Whether your pet needs to lose weight, gain weight, or transition to a new life stage, we’ll help you develop a nutrition plan that supports long-term health.
Parasite Prevention and Screening
Eastern North Carolina’s warm climate means parasites are a year-round concern. We’ll recommend the right combination of heartworm prevention, flea and tick control, and intestinal parasite screening based on your pet’s lifestyle.
Vaccinations
Vaccines are tailored to your pet’s age, health, lifestyle, and risk factors to provide protection without unnecessary treatments.
Time to Talk
No rushed appointments here. We’ll answer your questions, discuss changes you’ve noticed at home, and provide honest recommendations so you can make informed decisions about your pet’s care.
Wellness Needs Change as Your Pet Ages
Just like people, your pet’s healthcare needs change throughout their life. Regular wellness visits allow us to detect problems early, monitor changes over time, and provide personalized care at every stage from playful puppyhood and kittenhood to the senior and geriatric years.

Parasites Never Take a Season Off
Because we live in Eastern North Carolina, parasite prevention is an important part of every wellness visit.
We help protect pets from:
- Fleas can cause itching, skin infections, and tapeworms. They thrive in warm climates but can survive indoors through the winter.
- Intestinal Parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms, which also pose a risk to humans, can be found in standing water, feces of other animals, or contaminated soil.
- Mosquitoes transmit heartworm, which can be deadly to dogs. All it takes is ONE BITE for your dog to become infected. Heartworm disease is fatal to cats, even if they are indoor cats. There is no treatment or cure for heartworms in cats. Prevention is the only way to protect your cats (indoor or outdoor) from heartworms. Heartworms are a year-round risk.
- Ticks pose a risk to all dogs. Dogs that adventure outdoors on trails and yards are highly susceptible to these parasites. Ticks can carry Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.
We’ll recommend year-round prevention based on your pet’s lifestyle and risk factors.
Building Relationships Through Preventive Care
One of the greatest benefits of regular wellness visits isn’t something you can measure on a lab test. It’s trust.
As your pet becomes familiar with our team, visits become less stressful and more comfortable. We learn what’s normal for your pet, making it easier to recognize subtle changes over time and provide truly personalized care.
For more than 30 years, we’ve been honored to care for generations of pets throughout Farmville and the surrounding communities. We’d love to become part of your pet’s journey, too.
